A letter from Ieuan

Dear Friends

As I stand down officially as Plaid Leader tomorrow, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you as members for your support during the last twelve years. It has been an honour and a privilege for me to lead Plaid Cymru during the most exciting period in recent Welsh history.

I became Leader a year after the establishment of the National Assembly, and since then the Assembly has grown to be a much more powerful institution. Thanks to Plaid Cymru, it now has full law making powers.

During my period at the helm, the people of Wales have increasingly seen the Assembly as the natural place to take important decisions that affect our lives. We as a party can be proud of the fact that we played a critically important part in this. When Plaid entered government in 2007, we had a progressive government that was ready to put the interests of Wales first.

It was an enormous privilege for me to be able to serve Wales as Deputy First Minister in 2007, the first time in our history for us to participate in the government of our country. It is extremely important that Plaid sees itself as a party that can lead the Welsh Government successfully.

Whilst taking part in the last questions session as Leader on Tuesday, I said how much of a privilege it was to fill such a key post in Welsh politics, and to play a part in the growing development of the first Parliament that Wales has had in six centuries. I could not have asked for more than that.

Great responsibility rests on the shoulders of the next Leader, as Wales moves forward on to the next chapter of her constitutional development, and to improve the lives of the people of our country. I, like you, will give him or her every support in the challenges that lie ahead.

Thank you very much,
