Chair of Plaid Cymru group pays tribute to outgoing leader

The Chair of Plaid Cymru’s group in the National Assembly, Alun Ffred Jones AM, has today paid tribute to party leader Ieuan Wyn Jones as he embarks on his final week in the job.

Alun Ffred Jones described his leader’s contribution as vast, and said that he would leave a truly historic legacy – a full legislative parliament for Wales. He added that Ieuan Wyn Jones would step down as leader of a party that is proud of its achievements in government, and confident of its ability to govern.

The Chair of Plaid Cymru’s group in the National Assembly, Alun Ffred Jones AM said:

"We have a great deal to be grateful for when we look back at the vast contribution Ieuan has made. As a nation and as a party, Ieuan has taken the lead. He led Plaid Cymru into government, he led moves to ensure that our National Assembly gained legislative powers, and he delivered the referendum which confirmed those powers in 2011. Wales would not be the nation it is today had it not been for Ieuan’s leadership.

"When Ieuan steps down as leader later this week, he will leave a truly historic legacy for both the nation and the party.

"Ieuan’s brave lead in taking our party into government back in 2007 was bold and not without significant risk. Yet, he led our group of AMs who all made a success of our time in government. From the referendum, the Holtham Commission and the Welsh Language Measure to the Economic Renewal Programme, our achievements will be of lasting benefit to Wales. As a result, this party can be confident of our ability to govern and create a better future for all our communities.

"I can only thank Ieuan on behalf of his group of AMs and wish him well. We will continue to benefit from his knowledge and experience in the future, as we continue to fight for Wales under a new leader of Plaid Cymru."
