Jill Evans MEP and Elfyn Llwyd MP hail the achievements of Ieuan Wyn Jones

Plaid Cymru MEP and President Jill Evans and Elfyn Llwyd MP paid tribute to outgoing leader Ieuan Wyn Joes as he prepares to make way for a new leader on Thursday .

Ms Evans, an MEP since 1999, paid tribute to the Anglesey AM:

“Ieuan Wyn Jones secured a special place in the history of both Plaid Cymru and Wales after leading the party into the One Wales coalition government and securing law making powers for the Assembly.

“I've worked with Ieuan throughout my political career and I would like to thank him personally for all the support and encouragement he gave me.

"His resilience and determination first came to the fore when he targetted and won Ynys Mon for Plaid Cymru which was, in itself, historic. His organisational skills in running the first Assembly election campaign in 1999 ensured the best vote that the party ever had. His experience as an MP and AM meant that he was well prepared for government when the opportunity arose.

“Ieuan stands down from the leadership knowing that Plaid Cymru is in good heart, leaving his successor to build on his achievements and take the party on to even greater successes.”

Elfyn Llwyd, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, said:

"I personally owe Ieuan a debt of gratitude for his patience and the huge amount of assistance he gave me as a new member at Westminster.

"Plaid Cymru and indeed the Welsh nation owe Ieuan gratitude for his sterling service as deputy First Minister of the Welsh Government and for the selfless way in which he served Wales.

"I am constantly being told that Ieuan is the only Minister who has ever taken seriously the need to sustainably improve the North-South A470 road-link. This is just one example of his dedication and commitment to the issues that really matter to the people of Wales.

"Ieuan is probably the best political strategist that I have come across and still has a great deal to contribute.

"I wish him, Eirian and all the family all the very best for the future."
