Drop in GDP highlights need to tackle systemic economic weaknesses - Plaid

Plaid Cymru’s Economy Spokesperson, Alun Ffred Jones AM has said that the latest Eurostat GDP figures for Wales highlight the need to strengthen structures and tackle systemic weaknesses in the Welsh economy. The Plaid Cymru AM for Arfon said that the figures were as disappointing but not surprising.

Plaid Cymru Economy Spokesperson, Alun Ffred Jones AM said:

"While these figures are disappointing they are not surprising in light of the recession that hit Wales at that time. What these figures illustrate very clearly is how vulnerable the Welsh economy currently is at times of economic turmoil, particularly the West Wales and the Valleys region.

"Today’s figures highlight just how important it is that government action is taken to address the systemic weaknesses in our economic structures. The Economic Renewal Programme, introduced by Plaid Cymru in government, moved away from the historic grant dependent culture to a more sustainable, long term approach to economic development. It is vital that this approach is not now abandoned in favour of short term measures by the current Labour government."
