Plaid Cymru calls on Welsh Government to support more local borrowing

06/03/2022

Plaid Cymru has today (Tuesday 6th March) called on the Labour Welsh Government to support more local borrowing in order to get extra cash into local economies to help small businesses and jobs during the economic crisis.  The party has welcomed news that local authority borrowing is at a historically low level arguing that it demonstrates capacity for more government-financed borrowing.

Plaid Cymru wants to see increased investment on a local level in schools, housing and highway improvements in order to get the economy moving.

Plaid Cymru’s local government spokesperson, Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“Plaid Cymru wants to see any available money being pumped into local economies in order to provide a much needed boost and to get the economy moving.  During these difficult economic times the government needs to take urgent action to protect and create jobs and help small businesses.  The news today that local authority borrowing is at a historically low level is to be welcomed as it demonstrates that there is capacity for more government-financed borrowing.

“Plaid Cymru wants to see extra capital investment in in badly needed school buildings, houses and highways, including repairing potholes and resurfacing dangerous roads and pavements. Plaid Cymru believes that local authorities are key drivers of economic recovery and the Labour government needs to do what it can to enable them to deliver on that potential.”
