22/12/2021    Olympics - A welcome £8.9million should have been so much more

Olympics announcement confirms Labour cheated Wales out of more than £320 million

Plaid Cymru have welcomed the announcement that Wales will receive £8.9m as a result of spending on the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games since May 2010, but warned that Wales will still have lost out on £420m through the Games.

The announcement confirms the agreement in principle that the Games were an England-only spend which should have generated a Barnett consequential of £330m for Wales, as Plaid Cymru have argued from the very beginning.

The decision overturns that made by the former Labour government that this does not generate a Barnett consequential – a decision which has cost Wales £420m, including £100m from Lottery funding which should have come to Wales but was instead diverted to the Games.

22/12/2021    Plaid respond to Gus O'Donell's 'future of the UK' interview

Commenting on Sir Gus O'Donell’s interview in the Telegraph today, in which he said that “there will be enormous challenges, such as whether to keep our kingdom united”, Plaid Cymru's Jonathan Edwards MP said;

“Sir Gus O’Donnell is of course right to recognise the need to seriously consider the future make-up of the UK.

“The Scottish independence referendum, and the growing calls here in Wales for more control over our own resources and affairs, will fundamentally realign the political structure of the British state in the coming years.

“Here in Wales, the Welsh Government needs to prepare for what happens following that referendum vote and proactively work to seek greater responsibility over our own affairs.

“Unfortunately they currently seem incapable of putting together a coherent response to the economic challenges we face let alone the consequences of the break of the state.

“With the Silk commission reporting on important aspects of Wales' future in the coming two years, Plaid Cymru will continue to promote the aspirations of the people of Wales, determined to make our nation better by taking greater control over our affairs.”
