First Minister prefers to press Prime Minister to safeguard Labour AM’s positions

Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones has again challenged the First Minister on his lack of action to help the Welsh economy and attract further funding to Wales.

During First Minister’s questions in the Senedd, Plaid’s Mr Jones reported that the Scottish Government had pressed the UK government for a fair share of a UK government stimulus fund worth £20bn. He then asked the Welsh First Minister what representation he has made over the issue.

In response, Carwyn Jones avoided the question, referring instead to various conversations that occur Welsh and UK ministers on a variety of issues. The First Minister said that he would prefer to keep negotiations private despite the fact that he today (22/11/2021) publicised that he’d written to Prime Minister David Cameron on electoral reform.

Following the exchange in the Senedd, Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones AM said:

“The First Minister clearly had no information regarding any relevant discussions. Once again we have to ask whether this Labour government is doing anything at all when it comes to helping jobs and businesses, or getting further funding for Wales. It smacks of a complete lack of political will to help Wales during this economic crisis.

“The Labour First Minister is more than happy to try and pick a fight with the UK Government over electoral systems when it is in Labour’s interests to do so – but it seems that standing up for Welsh jobs and businesses is not something that he chooses to prioritise.”
