Plaid Leader reveals timetable for Leadership contest

Ieuan Wyn Jones has revealed the timetable for electing his successor as Leader of Plaid Cymru.

Nominations for the role will open in early January 2012, with the election process likely to take around 10 weeks. The new Leader of Plaid Cymru will be announced in time for the party's Spring Conference in March.

The timetable comes after Ieuan Wyn Jones asked Plaid’s national Chair to make the necessary arrangements to hold the leadership contest after plans for a party review were finalised.

Mr Jones signalled his intention to stand down as party leader in May following the 2011 Welsh General Elections, but agreed to stay in post while a review is conducted.

Now that the review is well underway, Mr Jones said he is satisfied that a clearer timetable for the leadership contest can be set.

Plaid Cymru Leader, Ieuan Wyn Jones AM said:

"I'm grateful to the party's NEC for the orderly way it has instigated our party's review following the May elections. Under the co-ordination of Eurfyl ap Gwilym, the full review is now underway and will be completed by the turn of the year. I am satisfied that the timetable for the review will allow for an early leadership contest in 2012.

"I look forward to an important contest for Plaid Cymru, where the proven talent that we have in our current team of AMs can step up and show their ambition to lead the party, and their ambition for Wales. With the individuals we have, it is clear that the future of the party will lie in good hands.

"Under my leadership, Plaid Cymru has emerged from a successful period in government and has continued to push the agenda forward since the May elections. We have operated as a constructive and robust opposition to the new Labour government since the election and highlighted their lack of ambition for Wales. We have also set out the alternative vision we have as a party and we will continue to do that under my leadership until it is time for me to hand over the reins to a new leader."

Plaid Cymru National Chair, Ellen ap Gwynn added:

"Following Ieuan’s announcement the party’s National Executive Committee will be asked to ratify arrangements for a leadership election in its next meeting.

"I will be asking the NEC to approve a timetable which ensures a new leader is in place for the spring conference in March. The election process will therefore officially commence at the beginning of January 2012.

"Between now and the election of the next leader we’re keen to ensure that as many people as possible can play their part in moving our party forward.

"The coming months will be a great opportunity for supporters, new and old, to get involved in the process of renewing Plaid and to be part of the election in the new year of Plaid's new leader.

"I’m pleased that Ieuan will continue the important work of leading the party until the next leader takes over next spring. His contribution to the party and the nation has been enormous and I’d like to thank him once again for his continued leadership of Plaid Cymru."
