Dafydd Elis-Thomas was first elected to the National Assembly in 1999, for the Meirionydd Nant Conwy constituency, and later for the Dwyfor Meirionydd constituency in 2007. Since the beginning of devolution he has served as the Llywydd, the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly. He currently Chairs the Assembly Commission and the Business Committee which oversee the workings of our Assembly.

 

Born in Carmarthen in 1946, Dafydd Elis-Thomas was brought up in Ceredigion and the Conwy Valley. He was first elected in 1974 as an MP (as the youngest MP in that Parliament), was later made a Life Peer in 1992 and also during his Parliamentary career was Plaid’s leader. Aside from his work in politics, Dafydd Elis-Thomas has also served on the Welsh Language Board, the British Film Institue and the Arts Council of Wales, as well as working in the private sector as a director of an environmental surveying company.


In addition to his duties at the Assembly, Dafydd Elis-Thomas is a member of the governing body of the Church in Wales, and an Honorary President of the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight Cymru. His political interests are focused on the development of devolution in Wales, and the status of Wales in Europe.
